Outstanding high school hockey players from Monmouth County and Ocean County will take to the Red Bank Armory ice on Aug. 5 at 5:15 p.m. for the 15th annual Jim Dowd Shoot for the Stars Foundation all-star game. Admission is $10.

The proceeds from the annual game go to a charity selected by Dowd, a retired 14-year NHL veteran, and his committee. Proceeds from the gate and a raffle of NHL memorabilia and donated prizes will benefit the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

“We gave to that charity last year and it’s scary to see how many families don’t have enough food to live on who live around you,” said Dowd, whose organization donated $20,000 last year. “The [food bank] can barely keep up with the need.”

Monmouth County leads the series, 9-5, but Ocean County won last year’s game, 5-3. A Most Valuable Player award will be presented to one member of each team.

Middletown native James van Riemsdyk, formerly of the Philadelphia Flyers and now with the Toronto Maple Leafs, played in the game in 2004 and was the Most Valuable Player for the Monmouth County team in an 8-1 victory.

James’ brother, Trevor, was the Most Valuable Player for the Monmouth County all-stars in the 2009 game.

A signed Zach Parise U.S. Olympic jersey will be auctioned off, along with a signed Marian Gaborik New York Rangers jersey, and a signed van Riemsdyk Flyers jersey.

The first 500 fans will receive free giveaways.
