Shuler-Foster, Jackson are track All-Americans

BY TIM MORRIS Staff Writer
Long Branch’s Miles Shuler-Foster and Raritan’s Bennett Jackson proved themselves on the biggest stage in New Jersey.

Earlier this month the two speedsters, who were rivals during the season, captured NJSIAA Meet of Champions (MOC) titles at Frank Jost Field in South Plainfield.

Shuler-Foster, a junior, ran a sizzling 10.39 in winning the 100-meter dash. It’s the second-fastest time in state history and it capped a perfect season for the Green Wave. It was the second MOC title of the year for him (he was the 55-meter dash champion during the indoor season).

Jackson, who chased Shuler-Foster in the 100-200-meter dashes during the season, won his specialty, the 110-meter hurdles at the MOC in a personal best 13.75. It was an historic victory for Jackson as he became the Rockets first-ever male MOC winner.

Last weekend, Shuler-Foster and Jackson proved themselves on the national stage, winning All-American honors at the New Balance Outdoor National Championships held at North Carolina A&T University in North Carolina. All- American recognition went to the top eight finishers in each event.

Shuler-Foster, qualified seventh in the preliminaries, posting a 10.59. He came back to run 10.52 in the final to finish third in the country. He trailed only Sean McLean, from nearby Raleigh, N.C., (10.41) and Darrel Wesh of Virginia Beach, Va., (10.42).

Jackson took fifth in the 110-meter final (14.03). He ran a 13.86 during qualifying and was seeded fourth for the final.

Both Shuler-Foster and Jackson will turn their thoughts to the gridiron. Jackson, a senior, is headed to the University of Notre Dame on a football scholarship, and Shuler-Foster will spend the summer at football clinics and narrowing his prospect colleges down. He quarterbacked the Green Wave to a 7-3 season ’09 and a trip to the state playoffs.

Christian Brothers Academy’s Jim Tully picked up an All-American certificate himself. He was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 197-4. He took third at the MOC after winning the Non-Public A state title.

Monmouth Regional junior Stephanie Skove was near her personal best of 12-1 in the girls pole vault. She did 11-10 in Greensboro and tied for 13th. Skove was the Group III state champion and placed fifth at the MOC.
