Flag Day service


U.S. Marine Pvt. Peter F. Banach Jr. assists in raising the U.S. and POW flags during the Long Branch Elks Lodge No. 742 Flag Day services on June 13. Also participating in the ceremony was the Long Branch VFW Honor Guard, along with Boy Scout Troop 148, and officers and members of the lodge. Banach, a 30-year resident of Long Branch, became a special police officer for the city of Long Branch in 1998 and became a volunteer firefighter in 1999. In 2006 he joined the Marine Corps and was deployed in 2007 to Fallujah, Iraq, where he conducted combat patrols throughout Al Andar province and Fallujah. In February 2008 he was deployed for a second tour to Fallujah and Ramadi, Iraq. In February he completed his active duty service and is now on reserve status.
