Behavior modification topic of PTA program

OCEAN TOWNSHIP — The Special Education PTA (SEPTA) will present a discussion of behavior modification techniques for children, featuring Kathleen Cable, licensed professional counselor and director of Camp Excel in Spring Lake Heights and in Bergen County.

The free event takes place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11, at the township of Ocean Intermediate School, West Park Avenue.

From not doing homework to not doing housework, from not dressing to not eating to not caring, every child, and in particular those with developmental disabilities, brings unique challenges, according to a press release from the parents’ group.

Cable will moderate a discussion of the behaviors that commonly frustrate parents and teachers, and the many modification techniques that can help solve them.

Using a system of rewards and/or demerits in order to achieve desired behavior, behavior modification works differently for every child, the release states. Camp Excel, a summer camp for children with social skills challenges, runs on a model of behavior modification that teaches self-control and patience while building self-esteem and confidence. Cable will share examples and camper success stories with attendees.

This program is recommended for family members, teachers, aides and administrators. Child care will be available. Contact japeterson718@ optimum.net to make arrangements.

Ocean Township SEPTA presents speakers on topics pertinent to parents and teachers at each monthly meeting. For more information, visit the website at www.oceantwpsepta.org.
