Shore A.C. wins men's, combined USATF titles
The Shore Athletic Club rules.
The West Long Branch-based club captured the combined team championship at the USA Track and Field Club Championships held at Icahn Stadium in New York City on July 10-12
The Shore A.C. won the men's championship by more than 100 points, completely outclassing the field. They rolled up 199 points, 111 more than runnerup ConnQuest (88).
The women were sixth (47), but when their point total was added to the men's, the 246 combined points beat out Greater Boston Track Club (234) for the combined championship by 12 points. GBTC did win the women's title (159).
The Shore A.C. men built their victory in the field events. It wasn't just the individual victories there, but the depth. They scored 24 points in the javelin, 19 points in the shot put, 15 in the hammer and 12 in the discus.
Kyle Mazur led the one-two-three sweep in the javelin with a winning throw of 215-10, just ahead of teammate Brandon Burkhardt (213-10).
Rhuben Williams (62-5 ¾) and Jon Kalnas (62-1 ¾) went one-two in the shot put.
Alexander Pessala won the hammer throw at 192-9.
In the discus, Shore A.C. throwers were fourth through sixth, led by Aaron Braxton (162-7).
Joseph Allen leaped to 25-3 ¼ to win the long jump competition.
On the track, Shore A.C. went one-two in the 5,000-meter race walk. Richard Luettchau (23:03.84) and John Souchek (26:04.75) were the team's scorers.
Elvus Lewis won the 400-meter dash, taking just 46.79 to get around the Icahn Stadium track.
The Shore A.C. team of Deon Bascom, Jeffrey Zodda, Dorian Ellerbe and Rob Novak, won the 4x800 relay (7:42.93).
For the women, sprinter Myasia Jacobs swept the 100 meters (11.73) and was second in the 200 (24.10).
Also collecting gold was thrower Amy Thayer, who won the hammer with a meet-record throw of 197-9.
