Residents urged to spread autism awareness

Autism New Jersey encourages all residents to help spread autism awareness during April, National Autism Awareness Month. New Jersey has the nation's highest prevalence rate, 1 in 94 children, compared to the national rate, 1 in 150. While there is no known cause of or cure for autism, early diagnosis and appropriate intervention are vital to the future development of children and adults on the autism spectrum. Since 1965, Autism New Jersey has been providing advocacy and information for parents of individuals with autism spectrum disorders and the professionals who support them. We know that autism requires lifelong services and care. We must help residents and their families every way we can. Increasing public awareness is the first step.

I encourage readers to visit www.autismnj.org to learn more about autism. Resources include information about support groups; services for professionals; services for parents, family members and caregivers; workshops; community education and outreach. Also included is an advocacy section with information on the laws, regulations and government policy and programs impacting people with autism. Individuals also can call us at 800-4-AUTISM.

My message of hope this April is that New Jersey families impacted by autism know they have a competent, compassionate resource in Autism New Jersey. There are an estimated 87,000 individuals affected by autism in this state. We are here for them, and will continue to diligently work toward heightened awareness as well as advocate for improved lifespan services.
