      Monmouth University is NEC preseason pick
            The Monmouth University baseball team will play its 2009 home opener on Friday in West Long Branch. Coach Dean Ehehalt's Hawks, who were chosen by the Northeast Conference coaches as the 2009 NEC favorite, will play Bryant University (Rhode Island) in a fourgame series that begins Friday at 3 p.m.

      Jersey Intensity field hockey team wins national title
            WEST LONG BRANCH — Jersey Intensity Field Hockey, a local national championship level field hockey club, traveled to Virginia Beach to compete in the U.S. Field Hockey National Indoor Tournament on March 6-8. The three-day tournament featured club teams from across the nation.

      Monmouth golf courses are open for season
            The Monmouth County Park System golf courses reopened March 15 with a special lineup of new promotions for the 2009 season. Anyone who holds a Monmouth County Park System golf ID card (resident or nonresident) will now earn one free round of golf for every 15 paid rounds of golf played at any Monmouth County golf course.

      Haskell tops 2009 Monmouth Park stakes
            OCEANPORT — With the $1 million Haskell Invitational on Aug. 2 leading the way, Monmouth Park will offer $4.7 million in stakes purses this year. Bolstered by an agreement signed with horsemen in 2008, Monmouth Park will see a $500,000 increase in stakes purses, or roughly 12 percent, according to a press release from the racetrack.

            The New Jersey Wildcats announced the addition of Delaware soccer standout Alli D'Amico. The Manasquan native is set to join the Wildcats when they travel to Long Island for a May 9 W-League seasonopener against the Rough Riders.

      Panel will examine horse racing industry
            Gov. Jon Corzine has signed an executive order creating the Governor's Commission on the Horse Racing Industry. The commission is to identify, assess and recommend possible funding solutions for horse racing meets after 2010 and propose long-term funding solutions that will promote the future sustained viability of the horse racing industry in New Jersey.

      Speedway office now open
            The Wall Township Speedway office, which is on the speedway grounds at 1803 Route 34, Wall Township, is open for the 2009 season. The office will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The speedway hotline, 732-681-6400, will be operational as soon as the speedway office reopens.

            The 15th annual three-mile run/walk, hosted by the Monmouth Beach School PTA in coordination with the Jersey Shore Running Club, will be held 9 a.m. May 9. Registration must be completed by April 30 to be guaranteed a T-shirt. The fee is $15 for run/walk and $10 for kid's races; on race day the fees will be $20 and $15, respectively.
