Putting clothes 'Back on the Racks' in city
Christine McAlary, owner of Back on the Racks consignment shop in Long Branch, holds up brand-new prom dresses that are being sold at her store. LONG BRANCH — A new store is opening in the city that will not only save people money, but could also help people make some money.
Back on the Racks consignment shop is set to open its doors during the first week of March at 144 Brighton Ave. in the West End section of the city. The store will offer trendy and classic clothing and accessories for teens and women from sizes 0-28.
"I've always loved shopping resale," said store owner Christine McAlary, who added that she is very excited to be opening her first retail consignment boutique.
"It's exciting to find unique things that aren't in the retail chain store, plus you always get a great bargain," she said. "But, I've become dissatisfied with some of the consignment stores. They just didn't have the atmosphere or the selection I was looking for.
"Many of the store layouts were confusing and merchandise didn't seem to be in any particular order, which makes it hard to find what you want," she continued. "So I decided to follow my dream and open Back on the Racks, which will have the feel of a chic boutique, but with the bargain prices of resale."
In anticipation of the store's grand opening, McAlary is accepting brand-name spring and summer clothing and accessories that are current in style, which are two years old or less and are in like-new condition.
As a unique alternative to consignment, Back on the Racks will purchase items for cash upfront, instead of customers waiting to see if the items sell.
"This gives customers who are looking for cash right away an alternative," McAlary said. "We'll give them 25 percent of our selling price for the item.
"Most consignment stores don't offer that option," she added.
Clothes being sold to Back on the Racks should be on hangers, cleaned and pressed, according to a press release from the store. The store is also accepting accessories, including shoes, handbags, costume jewelry and outerwear.
Items will be accepted on consignment for 90 days and any that remain after the 90 days can either be reclaimed by the owner or will be donated to charity, McAlary explained.
Until the store is open, customers must schedule an appointment and once the store opens for business, appointments will not be necessary, she said. For more information on how to consign clothing with Back on the Racks, or to schedule an appointment, call 732-614-4742.
