            Monmouth University's Pollak Theatre will host a reception for the St. Vincent de Paul Society 6 p.m. Jan. 25. Patrons bringing new unwrapped toys valued at $20 or more will be treated to the VIP reception prior to a concert by East Village Opera Company.

      Applications taken for advocate training
            180 Turning Lives Around, Hazlet, is accepting applications for its sexual violence advocate training Saturdays Jan. 17-March 7 at Little Silver Women's Club, Rumson Road and Church Street. Training provides volunteers with tools necessary to advocate for survivors of sexual violence.

      Carolers sought to sing at hospital Dec. 11
            Adults are now being sought to sing Christmas carols at 6 p.m. Dec. 11 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. A good voice is not required, just the desire to add a little enjoyment to patients, visitors and hospital staff.

      Film internships available for students
            The Educational Advisory Board of the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission is offering internships to students enrolled in film, television and communications degree programs. The internships are available for the spring semester, and open to students who either reside in New Jersey or are enrolled in New Jersey colleges and universities.

      Christmas program at Hook slated for Dec. 13
            A Christmas program will be offered 6-8 p.m. Dec. 13 at History House, Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook, Gateway National Recreation Area. The free event will feature live jazz, a visit from Santa, and children's craft activities. The American Littoral Society will hold its annual New Year's Day walk "Round the Hook" Jan. 1.

      County Genealogy Society to meet Jan. 11
            The Monmouth County Genealogy Society will hold its next meeting Jan. 11 at Eatontown Community/Senior Center, 72 Broad St. The Society will award prizes to the winners of the student essay contest at 1 p.m., hold its meeting at 1:30 p.m., and give a presentation at 2 p.m.

      Cherish the Ladies, Indian dance at MU
            Monmouth University's (MU) performing arts series will present Cherish the Ladies at 8 p.m. Deb. 13. Irish Step Dancers will also perform. The Irish group Cherish the Ladies blend of virtuosi instrumental talents, vocals, and step dancing. The group was chosen Best Musical Group of the Year by the BBC, and Top 100 Irish Americans by Irish America Magazine.

            Greater Media radio station WRAT-FM 95.9 is presenting its traditional WRAT Nutcracker with Shinedown and special guests Halestorm 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Starland Ballroom, Sayreville. Jacksonville, Fla., natives Shinedown are known for such hits as "Fly from the Inside," "45" and "Save Me.
