      RBC girls second at state meet

      In a duel between teams looking for a Northeast Regional ranking, Immaculate Heart Academy edged Red Bank Catholic for the State Non-Public School A crosscountry championship on Sunday.

      IHA, from Bergen County, slipped passed the Caseys, 60-67, to win the state title at Holmdel Park.

      RBC was led by its one-two of Michelle Capozzi (19:24) and Molly McNamara (19:51). who were third and eighth. Emil Rooney was 15th (20:23). Followed by Michelle Savarese, 17th (20:27) and Hannah Eckstein (20:48) in 24th.

      RBC's boys were fifth (136) in the race that featured the No. 1 (Don Bosco) and No. 5 (Christian Brothers Academy) teams in the Northeast.

      Bobby McGann (17:04) and Kyle Clonan (17:10) were 17th and 18th for the Caseys. James Galatola (17:27) and Kevin Byrne (17:37) were 23rd and 27th. Fifth scorer Brendan Mulhern was 51st (18:29).

      The top 10 individuals at Sunday's Group championships automatically qualified for Saturday's Meet of Champions back at Holmdel. In Group II, Rumson-Fair Haven's Max Sparshatt and Matt Metlitz punched their tickets to the MOC with top 10 finishes.

      Sparshatt continued his outstanding season with a fourth place (16:54) on Sunday. Metlitz grabbed the final qualifying spot, 10th, by just a second in (17:03).

      RBR was seventh (217) and Rumson, 12th (286).

      Shore Regional's girls were fourth in Group I (172). Erin Largey, a freshman, paced the Blue Devils in 20th overall (21:37).

      The Blue Devil boys were eighth (292). Dylan Cole in 22nd led the team (18:00).

      Saturday MOC will start at 10 a.m. with the boy's championship race followed at 10:45 with the girls.
