Monmouth University running back David Sinisi has been named Northeast Conference Offensive Player of the Week by conference officials after his impressive four touchdown effort against Central Connecticut State last Saturday.
Sinisi scored four consecutive touchdowns to overcome an early deficit and help the Hawks past Central Connecticut State, 30-20 on homecoming weekend. With his fourth touchdown, Sinisi scored his 300th point, tying former Wagner Seahawk Rick Sarille for the most points in NEC history. The Cedar Grove native ran the ball 29 times for 194 yards for an average of 6.7 yards per rush. The redshirt senior took possession of third place on the NEC's career rushing list.
Sinisi has scored 17 touchdowns this season, which is tied for the most in the NCAA. His 1,295 yards and 161.8 yards per game both rank first in the NCAA, with three regular season games to play. The Hawks, winners of five straight contests, will battle the University of Albany for first place in the league on Nov. 1.
Monmouth University senior Molly Passarella put the field hockey team up early, but they couldn't hold on as the Hawks dropped a close, double overtime 2-1 game to Siena on Sunday afternoon at Loudonville, N.Y.
The Hawks put the pressure on Siena early when Passarella beat two defenders, sending in a deep shot past Saint's goalie Renee Clavette to put Monmouth up 1-0 just nine minutes into the first half. The Blue and White were relentless in the first half, putting up 17 shots with 10 corners in the half.
The score remained the same until nine minutes into the second half when Siena answeredwith a finish by Kristin McGorty to tie the game, forcing overtime.
The game was forced into a double overtime and ended four minutes into double overtime when the Saints' Caroline Hunnewell smacked in a corner rebound to end the game in favor of Siena.
Coach Carli Figlio's crew will return to action for the last NEC match of 2008, as they travel to Lawrenceville Oct. 31 for a 4 p.m. game with Rider.
