Future of Ocean symposium Oct. 30
Monmouth University, West Long Branch, will host the fourth annual Future of the Ocean Symposium and Champion of the Ocean awards luncheon 10 a.m. Oct. 30 at Wilson Auditorium. The free event is open to the public.
Keynote speaker will be Dr. Shirley Pomponi, president of the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution. The symposium will also include other regional and local experts and leaders on ocean issues speaking on the interconnections of the ocean and human health.
Dr. Pomponi will receive a Champion of the Ocean Award for her work in the field. U.S. Rep. James Saxton, retiring after 13 terms as a member of the New Jersey delegation to Congress, will also receive a Champion of the Ocean Award.
The Coastal and Ocean Leadership Award will be presented to Dr. J. Frederick Grassle, founder of the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences at Rutgers University. The Volunteer of the Year Award will be given to Margo Pellegrino, Medford Lakes, who paddled her outrigger from Miami to Maine and then from New Jersey to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness for ocean issues.
