Blood drive slated for Aug. 23 in Long Branch
      Central Jersey Blood Center, Shrewsbury, has announced the following local blood drive: • Aug. 23 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., a Jersey Shore Hogs drive at Harley Davidson, 671 Broadway, Long Branch. All donors will be entered in a weekly drawing for a $500 gas card. The donation process takes about an hour.

      The Long Branch Concordance (LBC) will hold its second annual Back to Basics Fair 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Aug. 23 in Slocum Park, Slocum Avenue and Broadway, Long Branch. The free event will feature information about local social services and resources, back-to-school supplies, T-shirts, health screenings, face painting, balloon animals, entertainment and various foods.

Local History Room reopens at library Sept. 8
      Long Branch Free Public Library's local history room will reopen Sept. 8. The room will be open 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesdays. The library is at 168 Lincoln Ave. The room features a large collection of books on the history of Monmouth County and New Jersey, and newspaper clippings in the Robert Van Benthuysen Monmouth County and New Jersey collection from the 1960s-80s.

SCAN to hold video ID program Aug. 20
      SCAN Learning Center, Eatontown, will conduct its video identification of children (VIC) program noon-5 p.m. Aug. 20 at Jenkinson's Boardwalk (aquarium entrance), 300 Ocean Ave., Point Pleasant Beach. VIC is a free child safety program where parents and caretakers are encouraged to bring children age infant to 18 to be videotaped.

Agency to hold Day at Races, ChessFest 2008
      Prevention First, Ocean Township, will host a Day at the Races 11:30 a.m. Aug. 24 at Monmouth Park Race Track, Oceanport. The event is themed after the 1937 Marx brothers film, "A Day at the Races," and impersonators Groucho and Harpo will entertain guests during lunch.
