      Historic preservation on the table for discussion
      Council plans to develop law to preserve historic structures in the city
            LONG BRANCH - The City Council is expected to discuss recommendations made by the Planning Board on an historic preservation ordinance. Aproposed ordinance drafted by Councilman Brian Unger was passed along to the Planning Board, and after receiving suggestions the council agreed that some legal aspects of the proposed law still need to be explored.

      City man suspect in 7-Eleven theft
            LONG BRANCH - A city man is facing charges for allegedly robbing a 7- Eleven convenience store on Joline Avenue. Police arrested and charged Michael Jennings, 44, of Buttonwood Avenue, with robbery, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and theft on April 6.

      SICA brings 'Sculptoure '08' to Long Branch
            LONG BRANCH- The Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts (SICA) will start installations this week of the sculptures in its second annual urban sculpture park, "Sculptoure '08." The event will run from May 10 through Oct. 14.

      Register by April 28 for Monmouth Beach run
            TheMonmouth Beach School PTAin coordination with the Jersey Shore Running Club will host its 14th annual three-mile runMay 10 at 9 a.m. Sign-in will be held at 8 a.m. at Griffin Street Memorial Park. Runners are asked to register by April 28 to ensure receiving a T-shirt. There will also be food and refreshments available.

      'Aging With Grace' art show to open May 5
            The SCAN Learning Center, Monmouth Mall, Eatontown, will host its annual older Americans expo, "Aging With Grace," May 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The juried, all-media art show can be viewed from May 5-30. It will feature more than 30 senior service exhibitors. The event is free, open to the public and there will be giveaways and door prizes.

            The American Cancer Society's (ACS) National Minority Cancer Awareness Week is April 20-26. ACS research continues to show minorities have higher rates of cancer, are less likely to be diagnosed early, and have lower survival rates.

      Armenian genocide program at BCC
            Brookdale Community College's Center for Holocaust Studies will present a performance of the musical "The Georgetown Boys" on Saturday, May 3, at the Long Branch Middle School. The musical tells the true story of about 109 young boys who, after being orphaned during the Armenian Genocide, were brought to Canada to be trained as farmers in Georgetown, a suburb of Toronto.

            The Monmouth Beach Cultural Center, 128 Ocean Ave., will exhibit paintings by Donna Arvevlo, paintings and photos by Jennifer DiLorenzo and Jennifer Guida, and oils by Ellen Mandia through April 19. Watercolors by Linne Grant and paintings by Karin Petersen will be exhibited April 23-May 10. The center's parking lot garage sale will be held May 10 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

      ALS to help restore dunes at hook April 20
            The American Littoral Society (ALS), Highlands, will observe Earth Day 2008 by helping restore dunes at Sandy Hook April 20 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The public is welcome to take part. Monmouth County schoolchildren worked with ALS, and planted dormant American beach grass culms in pots, which the students will replant on the dunes.
