      State, Shore Conference tourneys rapidly approaching
      Teams scramble to make the cut in the final days of regular season
            With the postseason rapidly approaching, this week is an extremely important one for those teams currently on the bubble. The cutoff for the state basketball and wrestling tournaments are this weekend, meaning teams need to have a .500 record by the end of action Saturday to qualify.

            Rutgers freshman guard Mike Coburn has been named the BIG EAST ConferenceMen's Basketball Rookie of the Week for his play in wins over No. 18 Villanova and No. 13 Pittsburgh. Coburn averaged 20.0 points and 4.0 assists in the victories, as RU defeated ranked teams back-to-back for the second time in program history.

      Alleyne, RFH sprinters win county track titles
            Throughout the relay season, Monmouth Regional's EdrickAlleyne was the county's best shot-putter. When it came to back it up at Saturday's Monmouth County Indoor Championship at the Bennett Indoor Complex in Toms River, Alleyne did.

      Fish On
      Area fishing gets hot during coldest time of year
            The action this week has been red hot. The Garden State is producing some of the best winter fishing in years. With water temperatures staying steady offshore, party boats are filling coolers with a mixed bounty of fish. The Jamaica II from Brielle did just that. Capt. Steve and Capt. Ryan fished another solid week on their 12-hour offshore wreck trips.
