On Sunday, Sept. 9, the Monmouth County Park System will sponsor the 24th Annual Sprint Triathlon at Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, Ocean Avenue, Long Branch. A Jersey Shore tradition, this race is a half-mile ocean swim, 13-mile bike ride, and 4-mile run. The swim and run portions of the competition remain the same as in past years; however, the bicycle course has been straightened for 2007. Automobiles are not restricted from using the roads while the race is in progress; participants must bike on the road's shoulder, obey traffic rules and be cautious of traffic at all times. In the event of rough ocean surf, a beach run may be substituted for the swim. The event will begin at 7:45 a.m. (check in between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m.) The registration fee is $45. Entries will be accepted until Aug. 31 or maximum field size is reached. Race-day entries will not be accepted. Visit monmouthcountyparks.com for an application or call (732) 542-1642, ext. 23. For people with hearing or speech impairment, the TDD/TYY number is 711.

The New Jersey Twins, a 15U travel baseball team, went 5-2 at the Mickey Mantle 15-UAABC World Series held in Owasso, Okla., last month. The Twins, who won the New Jersey state title, beating Flemington 2-0 to qualify for the Mickey Mantle tournament, reached the semifinal round at Owasso.

Although the Twins are based in Blairstown, they have several area players, including Billy Acquaviva, Red Bank Catholic, Zachary Carroll, Howell High School, Tyler Haines, Freehold Township High School, Jeff Hensley, Allentown High School, Josh Howell, Allenton High School, Charlie Lasky, Colts Neck High School, Mike Maiorano, Allentown High School, and Andy Sullivan, Monroe High School.

The Twins are run by John Wilson, a professional scout for the Minnesota Twins. The team is designed to accelerate players' skills through proper training both in and out of season. That is combined with academic achievement.
