      Trio keeping Shore in swing of things
            While not quite ready to label his team ready to compete for a division title, veteran coach Mike Whitacre has high hopes for his Shore Regional golf team nonetheless. The Blue Devils, who compete in the Shore Conference's Class B Central, return three seasoned starters from last year's 8-7 squad and look forward to making another run at the state tournament this spring.

      Bulldogs ready to compete with Shore's elite teams
            There was a lot riding on Rumson-Fair Haven's boys tennis match with Holmdel on Tuesday. While the top-ranked Hornets are generally considered the team to beat this season, RFH head coach Don Russell was confident that his team was capable of knocking off their division rivals.

      Skowronski's efforts highlights Hawk opener
            It took just one meet for Monmouth University thrower Ed Skowronski to qualify for the IC4A and NCAA Regional meets. Competing at 12th annual Monmouth Season Opener in West Long Branch, the Raritan High School graduate flung the hammer 191-2, good enough to attain the qualifying standards for the IC4A and NCAA's.

            Fish On The fishing is great, even if weather isn't While anglers around the state anxiously await the return of the warm weather, fishing remains solid for both flounder and striped bass. Word from Raritan Bay is anglers are warming up, playing catch-and-release with as many striped bass you can reel in on the ingoing and outgoing tides.

            New Jersey just finished the biggest swim meet of the season last weekend, the Junior Olympics held at Rutgers University. The Atlantic Club Swim Team's 13- and 14-year-old girls team won the 400 Medley Relay and placed second in the 400 Free Relay. The meet was a three-day swim meet for all Gold and above level swimmers.

      Sandy Hook Golf Open taking registrations
            The 18th annual Sandy Hook Foundation Golf Open planning committee is under way and meets every two weeks at Bahrs Restaurant and Marina in Highlands (Bay Avenue at the foot of the Highlands Bridge). The outing is planned for Monday, May 14 at the exclusive Bamm Hollow Country Club in Lincroft.
