      LONG BRANCH - For more than a decade, Long Branch officials have been promoting the importance of college education to inner-city youths through the "Get on the Bus" college tour. Literary magazine garners top honors
OTHS publication one of only seven in state recognized

      OCEAN TOWNSHIP - Each year township high school students work together to publish the student literary magazine "Afterglow." Their efforts have resulted in recognition for the magazine before, but the 2006 issue, according to the magazine's adviser, has been ranked "highest" among similar school publications.

County mulls off-leash dog park in Oceanport

      OCEANPORT- - At the urging of local dog owners, the Monmouth County Park System is considering creating an off-leash dog area on a county-owned tract in Oceanport. Park system officials are conducting a study at the county-owned Wolf Hill.

Students wear hats for cancer
      The student council at Pope John XXIII Regional School in Ocean Township sponsored Hat Day recently to raise money for the nonprofit group Foundation For Children With Cancer. The student council asked students and teachers to make a donation and wear hats in support of children who have cancer and often lose their hair due to chemotherapy.

Middle-schoolers reap rewards for reading
      The students of Elizabeth Manuel's class have a reason to celebrate. They were chosen as the winners of the Achieve3000 TeenBiz "Showcase of Talent." Students from the four middle school grades in the Alternative Program and Challenge Program read daily news articles sent to them by Achieve3000 and completed an activity that correlated to the articles.

M.B. school dedicates run to former resident
      MONMOUTH BEACH - Monmouth Beach School PTA will host its annual three-mile run May 12 at 9 a.m. The run has been renamed the Shana Wasserman Memorial Run in memory of former 19-year-old resident Shana Wasserman, who died in December of bacterial meningitis.

      The second grade reading class at Amerigo A. Anastasia School, Long Branch, topped off a lesson on Greece with a tasty treat, thanks to their teacher Ms Caren. After reading a book about Greece and its culture, the class was treated to a delicious lunch provided by It's Greek to Me restaurant in Pier Village, Long Branch.
