Visitors urged to wash hands after petting zoo trips

New Jersey Poison Information and Education System (NJPIES), at University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark, reminds parents, grandparents and children wash hands after visiting petting zoos to avoid contracting infection.

During the fall season, several farms have petting zoos, pumpkin picking, apple picking and hayrides, and in the past, there have been outbreaks of E. coli infections associated with handling animals at petting zoos, agricultural/state fairs, farms, etc. Most places with petting zoos provide both hand washing and hand sanitizers, but parents and grandparents carry hand sanitizers just in case.

For more information, call (800) 222-1222.
