Beach field trip set for Oct. 8

The American Shore & Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA) is hosting a tour of northern New Jersey beaches on Oct. 8 starting at 2 p.m. at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa on Ocean Boulevard in Long Branch.

The field trip will include a guided bus tour of the northern portion of the Sea Bright to Manasquan Beach Erosion Control Project, the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area and the facilities of New Jersey Sea Grant and Marine Science Consortium.

Sites of interest will include the massive stone seawall fronted by six miles of beach fills, environmentally important areas in the beach fill project, the "Critical Zone" at Sandy Hook and other coastal/bay sites within the National Recreation Area.

The cost of the event is $50 per person and registration for the tour will end Oct. 5.

The tour will conclude at 5 p.m. with a reception at the New Jersey Marine Sciences Building at the end of the tour. The bus will return to the hotel at 6:30 p.m.

Woman's Club to hold meeting, casino trip

The Woman's Club of Little Silver will hold its next regular meeting Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. The meeting will feature a speaker from the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County.

A bus trip to Atlantic City will be Oct. 22 departing the clubhouse at 111 Church St. at 10 a.m. Cost is $30 for transportation, $18 for slots and an $8 food voucher.

Fall term classes begin Oct. 12 at Brookdale

180, Turning Lives Around, Hazlet, wishes to remind residents it offers the following counseling, confidential services, and support groups: sexual assault survivors group, positive opportunities for parenting (POP) group, daytime and evening domestic violence support groups (Hazlet and Manasquan), substance abuse counseling for women, and art therapy for children affected by domestic violence. Tours, talks at Monmouth Medical Center

Monmouth Medical Center, 300 Second Ave., Long Branch, will host the colorectal cancer support group meeting Oct. 4 from 7:30-9 p.m. To register, call (732) 923-7711.

A tour of the Eisenberg Family Center for expectant mothers will be Oct. 8 at 1:30 p.m. The center features expanded labor, delivery and recovery units.

A baby fair will be held Oct. 19 from 7-9 p.m. The free event is for expectant and prospective parents and will feature tours of the Eisenberg Family Center, refreshments and gifts.

"The New Cervical Cancer Vaccine: What You Need to Know" will be presented by Anu Chakraborty, M.D., and Margaret C. Fisher, M.D., Oct. 11 from 7-9 p.m. The doctors will discuss which individuals should get the vaccine, how long its protection will last, and its safety. To register, call (888) 724-7123.

Helpers needed to plan birthday parties for kids

Spring House, 155 South St., Eatontown, a transitional home for homeless women and children, is seeking volunteers for its new project called "Birthday Buddies."

There are 10 young children living at Spring House with their mothers. Residents stay up to one year, while the mothers attend school and work training to prepare for the future. Volunteers with the Birthday Buddies plan to throw birthday parties for all children living at the facility, and are seeking additional buddies to help. Buddies can be individuals, businesses, youth groups, church groups, Scouts, or other groups. Spring House will accept cash donations to use to fund the birthday parties. Donations from sponsors such as party stores, department stores, bakeries and other outlets are also sought.

Shore Walk for Autism Research Sept. 30

The National Alliance for Autism Research will present the inaugural "New Jersey Shore Walk for Autism Research" Sept. 30 at Manasquan Beach. Check in time is 10 a.m., and the walk begins at 11:30 a.m.

Walkers will raise much-needed funds for research and to increase awareness of autism spectrum disorders. More than 106 teams have registered for the walk, with $83,000 raised.

Chemistry carnival

slated at Brookdale

Brookdale Community College, Newman Springs Road, Lincroft section of Middletown, will celebrate National Chemistry Week with a "Halloween Chemistry Carnival" Oct. 22 from 1-4 p.m. in the parking lot at Warner Student Life Center.

The second annual event will feature explanations of the simple chemistry behind many products and materials in America's homes, hands-on activities, and a Halloween chemistry demonstration. Local high school and college students will conduct the science demonstrations and provide participation opportunities. Area schools participating will be: Brookdale; Monmouth University, West Long Branch; High Tech High School, Lincroft; Raritan High School, Hazlet; and Ocean Township High School.
