The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders recently honored several students at art and science competitions held during its Earth Day Fair at the Monmouth County Library, Manalapan. To refocus attention on recycling, the Board announced a new initiative, "Slow the Flow - Recycle!" aimed at increasing public awareness about the benefits of recycling. Local winners of the 2006 Monmouth County Earth Day Fair were: Jessica Miller, a kindergartner at Woodmere School, Eatontown, a $75 bond for second place for a colored picture of the earth with wind and clouds; Nicole VanMeerbeke, second grade, Woodmere, a $100 bond for first place for her poster illustrating the theme "My Favorite Thing in Nature"; Victoria Van Wagner, third grade, Woodmere, a $75 bond for second place for her poster of "My Favorite Thing in Nature"; and Amanda Curtis, fourth grade, Margaret L. Vetter School, Eatontown, a $75 bond for second place for her poster illustrating the importance of water.
Danielle Jones, Eatontown, has received a Lockheed-Martin Scholarship in the amount of $4,000. A sophomore at Rowan University, Glassboro, Jones is a chemical engineering major and secretary of the Society of Women Engineers, Rowan Chapter. She is also an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Taiany Luz, Long Branch, a senior at Long Branch High School, recently won a Merit Scholarship to attend Berkeley College, Woodbridge. The scholarship was awarded based upon Luz's academic achievement in high school.
