A dedication ceremony for Monmouth County’s 9/11 Memorial at the Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook, Atlantic Highlands, will be held Sept. 11 at 2 p.m.
The memorial is dedicated to the Monmouth County families and friends who were lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
Attendees must park at the Manhattan Ferry/SeaStreak terminal on Shore Drive, Highlands. Shuttle transportation to and from Mount Mitchill will be provided. Parking at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook will be available only for vehicles with handicap licenses/placards.
The memorial includes a table of black granite that is inscribed with the names, towns and ages of the 169 men and women who perished on that tragic day. At the center of the table is a beam from the World Trade Center, held up by a sculpture of an eagle. The path leading to the memorial is a narrative of the events of 9/11. The times of the significant events that happened on Sept. 11 are carved into the walkway.
Mount Mitchill overlooks Sandy Hook, the Raritan and Sandy Hook bays, and the New York City skyline.
The ceremony is being held by the Friends of the Parks and the Monmouth County 9/11 Memorial Committee, which raised funds for the memorial. There will be remarks by Lewis M. Eisenberg, former chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
