Grant, Nembhard star for OT at state relays in Princeton
Ocean Township sprinters Tiffany Grant and Georgina Nembhard are ready for Sunday’s NJSIAA State Group III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Princeton University.
The Spartan stars helped Ocean medal in a pair of events at the NJSIAA State Relays held Jan. 9 in Princeton. The relays served as a warm-up for the individual state championships that begin with groups III (8:30 a.m.) and II (2 p.m.) competing Sunday in Jadwin Gymnasium.
Led by Grant and Nembhard, Ocean finished third in two relays last Sunday.
Ocean was third in the 4x200 behind two of the state’s premier sprint powers, Franklin (1:46.81) and Willingboro (1:49.83). Nembhard, Jaimie Brown, Andrea Lopez and Grant registered a 1:50.95 in third.
Nembhard led Ocean’s sprinters to a third in the 4x55-meter shuttle hurdles. She again ran the lead-off leg of the relay. Vicki LaMarre, Amanda Dilger and Brown completed the running order. The Spartans turned in a 34.88 behind Willingboro (33.69) and Kingsway (33.84).
Among the boys in Group III, Red Bank Regional was third in the 4x800. Andrew Fouratt, Russell Kiely, Tom Friscia and Dennis Waite combined to run an 8:30.00, trailing only Randolph (8:27.61) and Colts Neck (8:27.61).
The Bucs also had a sixth place in the 1,600-meter sprint medley (3:53.50). Making up the quartet were Kiely, Tindle, Tim Matlack and Friscia.
In Group II, with Jarrett Sanderson leaping over the bar at 6-foot-2, Long Branch was fourth in the high jump relay (11-10). Tushun Polk (5-8) was the second half of the relay team.
Monmouth Regional finished fourth in the girls shot put relay with Dominque Whitfield showing the way with her 36-11 3/4, which was fourth best. Combined with Amanda Neis’ 28-7 3/4, the Golden Falcon duo’s 65-7 1/2 put them in fourth place.
Red Bank Catholic was sixth in the 4x800 (10:13.61). Running for the Caseys were Jennifer Booton, Tina Forgach, Meghan McGrath and Erin Lunny.
Tomorrow, the state relays will conclude with groups IV (9 a.m.) and I (1:30 p.m.) taking their turn. Sunday, trips to the Meet of Champions as well as individual titles will be on the line as the individual state championships get started. The top six finishers in each event will advance to the indoor MOC, which is not until Feb. 27 in Princeton. Because of scheduling quirks, groups IV and I wait until Feb. 20 to make their run at state championships. The Monmouth County Relays are scheduled for Jan. 22 at the Jersey City Armory. The individual county championships will take place Jan. 29 in Jersey City.
