Area track teams shine at Jersey Shore Relays

Area track and field teams got ready for Sunday’s NJSIAA State Relays at Princeton University at the Jersey Shore Relays on Dec. 27.

The Atlantic Club in Manasquan hosted this year’s Shore relays, where area teams fared quite well.

Shore Regional’s girls collected a pair of wins in the Small School division in the 1,600-meter sprint medley and distance medley.

Nicole Ullmeyer, Nicole Kirk, Ali Houlis and Martine McGrath teamed up to win the 1,600-meter sprint medley in 5:06. The relay consists of 800-400-400-800-meter legs.

The Blue Devils won the DMR in 14:46.1. Justine Carnevale led the relay off, running the 1,200 leg. Kirk followed with the 400 and Ullmeyer then ran the 800. McGrath closed it out with the 1,600-meter leg, anchoring the Blue Devils to the triumph.

Dominque Carnevale, Sarah Grimm, Alex Marchese and Kelsey Rich were fifth in the 4x800 relay (12:59) for Shore.

Red Bank Catholic won the 4x800 in 12:09.1. Running for the Caseys were Deb Lang, Marta Laskowski, Katie Mulhern and Susan Groff.

RBC also scored in the distance medley (third in 15:13.7), 4x55-meter shuttle hurdles (third in 40.9) and the 4x200 (third in 2:07.0).

Monmouth Regional’s Tamika Warren was first in the shot put with a throw of 37-7. Teammate Amanda Neis was fourth (29-2), enabling the Golden Falcons to finish first.

The Falcons were second in the sprint medley (5:11.0).

RBC’s Nicole Bailey (31-6) and Deb Lang (28-10) were second and fourth.

In the Large School division, Red Bank Regional’s Megan Carr was first in the high jump (4-8).

Long Branch’s Jarett Sanderson was first in the Large School high jump, clearing 6-2. Teammate Tushun Polk was fourth (5-8), and that gave the Green Wave the victory.

Red Bank Regional’s Tim Matlack did 5-10 and was third individually.

The Green Wave’s sprinters were second and fifth in the 4x200. Marcus Jenkins, Tom Jeter, Robert Cheese and Sanderson made up the “A” team that was second to Lakewood, 1:41.0-1:42.8. The Long Branch “B” team was Terrence McKeller, Anthony Cummings, Victor Ramos and Terry Paul, who combined for a 1:47.9.

In the Small School division, Shore Regional’s boys won the 4x800 in 9:33.0. Pablo Martin, Michael Hendricks, Trevor Hewitt and Joe Ruane combined to win by more than 20 seconds.

Matt Reidy was first in the high jump at 5-8, and with teammate Ryan Dwyer, tied for second at 5-4, the Blue Devils were first here as well.

Shore’s Tom Scheffling and Jason Wrubel tied for second, with each throwing 42-7.

But with Scott Wagnon finishing first with a 45-11 effort and teammate Mario Fragal reaching 39-9, the Caseys edged the Blue Devils for first.

Scott Britton (1,600), Hendricks (400), Hewitt (800) and Ruane (1,600) were second in the DM (12:22.0).

Mike Oshetsky, Matt Villane, Dwyer and Keith Thoma were second in the Shuttle Hurdles for Shore (36.7).

Derek Schultz, Demitri Alicakos, Thoma and Oshetsky were third in the Sprint Medley (4:21.0).

Sunday, Groups II and III will compete for the relay state championship at Princeton. Group III will go off at 9 a.m. and Group II at 1:30 p.m. Groups I and IV are up on Jan. 15. Group IV starts at 9 a.m. and Group I at 1:30 p.m.
