BCC’s Krzan named region’s best player; teammate O’Mara, second
Brookdale Community College’s women’s soccer team had the distinction of having the two best players in Region XIX this fall.
Freshman forward Kendal Krzan, a graduate of Middletown South High School, finished No. 1 in the voting of coaches for the region’s top player in 2004, and it was her Jersey Blues teammate Kerry O’Mara, a sophomore midfielder, who finished second in the voting.
Krzan and O’Mara were both named the All-Region XIX First Team, and were joined on it by teammates Erika Thompson (Raritan) and Tammy Wood (South River). Thompson is a defender and Wood is a goalie.
O’Mara and Wood were returning All-Region selections.
In the voting, the All-Garden State Athletic Conference First Team honors went to forward Lisa Alberti (Marlboro) and defender Lauren Marotta (Long Branch). Second Team recognition was garnered by defender Lauren Nangana (Marlboro) and Wood.
Brookdale won a share of the GSAC championship for the second straight year.
Krzan had some big shoes to fill at Brookdale. Her older sister, Lauren Krzan, was a two-time All-American for the Jersey Blues. Being recognized as the region’s best is an outstanding start for the ex-Eagle, who led Brookdale in scoring with 29 points on 12 goals and five assists.
O’Mara tallied 22 points on seven goals and eight assists.
Brookdale’s men also received postseason honors. Forward C.J. Bordino (Neptune), midfielder Rich Frye (Matawan) and defender Dane Hodge (Neptune), were named to the Garden State Athletic Conference Division III First Team.
In the voting for the top player in Region XIX, Frye finished fifth.
