Reader offers correction on
law for access for disabled

I was happy to see the article by Kathy Hall about theater renovations in the area. There is a serious error though, by Count Basie’s marketing director, Regina Paleau. There is no grandfather clause under the ADA [Americans With Disabilities Act]. (She may be thinking of New Jersey codes, but they are superseded by the ADA.) All facilities must make ongoing access improvements that are readily achievable as they can.

Please correct this misconception. which may reinforce errors unfortunately shared by many, including building inspectors.

The Department of Justice’s "ADA Guide for Small Business" spells the obligations out very clearly. at www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/smbusgd.pdf.

Thank you.
