Local swimmer makes quite a splash for charity
Local swimmer Ashley Moore managed to swim for more than six hours on July 22, and she did it for a good cause.
Moore, of Keyport, a member of the Long Branch Swim Club, participated in the annual Promenade Beach Club swimming marathon to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. She had swam in marathons in the past, and was determined this year to beat her previous personal best of 240 laps.
"I was so impressed," said her mother, Robin Moore. "She could barely walk after she was done."
Ashley took only two short breaks throughout the marathon and was the only swimmer left in the pool well after the rest of the volunteers had finished.
"I just swim until I can’t swim anymore," said Ashley. "I was just doing it for the dying children."
In the process, Ashley developed a mild case of sun poisoning, as she was in the pool from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., where she swam a total of 400 laps.
For her efforts, Ashley managed to raise $590 for the cause.
"I raised the money because I am tired of people dying," said Ashley. The 18-year-old Moore plans on extending her personal best at next year’s marathon.
"Next year I’m aiming for 500," she said.
This years marathon took place at the Promenade Beach Club on July 22 in Long Branch. The marathon is held annually to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
