Monmouth University working hard to ensure students make good neighbors

      Monmouth University working hard
to ensure students make good neighbors

In response to your recent article about the concerns from local residents over Monmouth University students living in off-campus houses in Elberon, we would like to provide you and your readers with further information about Monmouth University policies already in place to educate students on how to be good neighbors.

First, we would like to point out that most Monmouth University students living off campus are responsible and respectful members of their community. Just like the rest of their neighbors, students go to school, work part time, perform volunteer work, etc.

The university is proactive in educating students living off campus about the importance of being respectful of their neighbors and has taken an active, hands-on approach in matters involving student life off campus.

Through the Office of Off-Campus and Commuter Services, students are informed verbally and in writing that, as members of the university community, they will be held accountable for their behavior. Additionally, students living within the local community receive a copy of the "Guide to Living Off-Campus" from the university.

Throughout the academic year, the office maintains regular communication with the local communities as part of the Community Relations Task Force. The task force has representatives from Long Branch, Ocean Township, Deal, local neighbors, student leaders and representatives from the university. Meeting twice a semester, the task force has been a great way for students and community representatives to address concerns, promote upcoming programs. The task force also has made it possible for Monmouth University to intervene with off-campus issues in a timely manner.

Please be aware that Monmouth University has a zero tolerance policy regarding disorderly conduct by students on and off-campus.

Monmouth University has established a close working relationship with the city of Long Branch Police Department to resolve situations of concern with community residents in a timely manner.

As we look to the future, students, Monmouth University, Long Branch officials and landlords must work together to create standards for good neighbor conduct.
