Sandy Hook’s Beach E was the site of the park’s final lifeguard competition of the summer on Monday, as local lifesavers took part in the grueling, 5-mile row competition.
Belmar’s Jason Pattilo and John Quinn took top honors in the Class A boat competition, completing the row in 47:40.
They were followed by Bradley’s Matt Munley and Steve Gober, who came in just 20 seconds behind the Belmar duo.
The local contingent was well-represented also, as Sandy Hook’s Rol Woolson and John Ferrie took third in 48:48, followed by fellow Sandy Hook lifeguards Tom McLoughlin and Dave Pierson, who completed the course in 49:12.
Among the Class B boats, Newport, R.I., guards Jim McHeffey and Terry Mey made their long trip worthwhile with a first-place finish, completing the course in 58:18. They were followed by Beachhaven’s Joe Hodnicki and Billy Webster (1:03:10).
Tomorrow, many of the same local lifesavers will head down to Bradley Beach for a 10-mile wooden boat competition, the final rowing competition of the summer.
Sandy Hook’s McLoughlin and Pierson won the event the last time it was held, two years ago.
