State chips in to ease tax burden

WEST LONG BRANCH — The borough has received word from the state that it will get $100,000 in extraordinary aid to help reduce the tax levy in the municipal budget.

Borough Clerk Lori Cole said on Monday that a special meeting of the Borough Council would be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday to amend the budget to reflect receipt of the state funds and to finally adopt the spending plan.

Gail M. Watkins, the borough’s chief financial officer and treasurer, said the money is being advanced to the borough from the state Department of Community Affairs. She said it will reduce the tax levy to $3,589,713.

Receipt of the state funds shaves about 1 1/2 cents from the tax rate, which now will be 53 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, according to Watkins.

She said the overall municipal budget will now total $6,447,966.61.

It was Watkins who first proposed to the council that the borough apply for the funds, because she felt the town met the criteria to qualify for them.

The borough was hit hard by the cost of the cleanup from the Aug. 2 storm that swept through a narrow area of the Shore, felling lots of trees.

The cleanup, which went on for weeks, cost the borough $350,000.
