GERTHA MAE PITTS, 68, of the Cliffwood Beach section of Aberdeen, died Jan. 14 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel, following a lengthy illness. Born in Tuskegee, Ala., she moved to New Jersey in 1956. She was a master presser at Miller’s Cleaners, Freehold, for 15 years. She was a former member of the New Mount Baptist Church, Alabama. She is survived by her husband, James Otis Pitts of Cliffwood Beach; six daughters and one son-in-law, Jane and Harold Brown of Neptune, Judy Pitts and Normaree Pitts, both Asbury Park, Gloria Pitts of Aberdeen, Brenda Pitts of Eatontown, and Cortrice Pitts of Keansburg; two sons and one daughter-in-law, James Pitts Jr. of Cliffwood Beach, and Corey and Dennis Pitts of Aberdeen; a sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and Herbert Outsey of Columbus, Ga.; six brothers-in-law; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at New Hope Baptist Church, Freehold. Interment was at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet.
ORTRUDE H. "TRUDY" HOLLERING, 70, of the Lincroft section of Middletown, died Jan. 18 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided in Freehold, Holmdel and Union before moving to Lincroft. She was a retired executive administrative assistant at P.I.C., Asbury Park, and Red Bank. Prior to that, she was a legal secretary at Zager and Fuchs, Red Bank. She was an active member of the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, Tinton Falls, where she was involved with its choir, Craft Christians, and vacation Bible school. Her activities included thoroughbred horses, which she and her husband raised and raced. She was predeceased by her husband, L. Karl Hollering, in 1994. She is survived by her son, Kurt F. BESSIE FISHER GREEN KIRSCHNER, 71, of Point Pleasant, formerly of Asbury Park, died Jan. 11 at the Medical Center of Ocean, Brick Township. Born in Long Branch, she resided in Asbury Park before moving to Point Pleasant six years ago. She was employed at Fisher’s Grocery Store, Asbury Park, where she assisted her mother for several years. She was a former member of Congregation Sons of Israel, Asbury Park. She was a former member of the Young at Heart Club, and the Democratic Club, Asbury Park. She was predeceased by her husband, Irving Kirschner, in 2002; her first husband, Jacob Green, in 1969; and her son, Ira K. Green, in 1985. She is survived by her brother, Joseph Fisher of the Wanamassa section of Ocean Township and Tinton Falls; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews. LESTER ROGERS, 97, of Sea Bright died Jan. 14 at his son’s home in Long Branch. Born in Sea Bright, he resided there with his son and daughter-in-law for 35 years. Mr. Rogers was a self-employed commercial fisherman, retiring 17 years ago. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons. He was predeceased by his wife, Edna Reynolds Rogers, in 1973; a daughter, Edna Layton, in 1999; a son, Lester Rogers, in 2002; and two grandchildren. He is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, Robert and Maria Rogers of Long Branch, Thomas and Barbara Rogers of Wrightstown, and Barbara Rogers of the West Keansburg section of Hazlet; a son-in-law, Charles Layton of Highlands; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
LOUIS MASTRIA, 78, of Rumson died Jan. 1 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Jersey City, he had been a resident of Rumson for the past 44 years. Mr. Mastria was a deputy comptroller at Fort Monmouth Signal School, Eatontown, for 38 years, retiring in 1979. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 3187, Fair Haven, and the Officers Club, Fort Monmouth. He enjoyed time with his family, and was an avid baseball player and played with the Tigers Athletic Club. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carmela Piroso Mastria of Rumson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Louis "Corky" and Ann Marie Mastria Jr. of Monmouth Beach, and John P. and Karen E. Mastria of Middletown; his daughter and son-in-law, Frances L. and Dr. Keith Sharkan of Malvern, Pa.; two brothers, Vincent Mastria of Belleville, and Richard Mastria of Cape Cod, Mass.; and seven grandchildren. PRACIDO "PETE" FICARRA, 74, of Shrewsbury Township died Jan. 13 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Red Bank, he lived there prior to moving to Shrewsbury Township in 1964. Mr. Ficarra was a security guard at Fort Monmouth, Eatontown, for several years. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1946-48. His activities included horse racing and music, especially the music of Frank Sinatra. He is survived by his son, Peter L. Ficarra of Shrewsbury Township; his brother, Bill Figaro of Swansboro, N.C.; two sisters, Ann J. Witek of Middletown and Jean Tillman of Elmhurst, N.Y.; and one granddaughter. Interment was at Brig. MADELINE A. GEIGER, 70, of Middletown died Jan. 15 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Hoboken, she resided in Middletown since 1968. She was a learning assistant in the writing lab at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown, for 20 years. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, William Geiger of Middletown; her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Monica Geiger of Shrewsbury; her daughter, Anne Geiger of Franklin Park; and two grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth. Burial was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
