Man arrested for armed robbery
EATONTOWN — A Red Bank man and a 15-year-old were arrested for the alleged armed robbery of a cab driver last week, according to police.
Thomas Herson, 20, West Street, Red Bank, was arrested in the early morning of Wednesday, May 22, and charged with robbery and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to Capt. George Jackson of the Eatontown Police Department.
The following day, Jackson said, police arrested a 15-year-old Red Bank youth for his alleged involvement in the robbery.
At approximately 12:27 a.m. police responded to a report of a robbery having just occurred on Byrnes Lane, Jackson said.
A cab driver, an employee of Yellow Car taxi service, Red Bank, told police he had picked up two males on West Street, Red Bank, with a destination of Asbury Park. When the cab entered the Eatontown area, the two men allegedly directed the driver to Byrnes Lane and told the driver to stop, Jackson said.
At that time, according to police reports, the minor allegedly got out of the cab and placed a handgun to the driver’s head and threatened to kill him if the driver did not hand over his money.
According to the driver, he allegedly gave Herson $200 in cash while Herson was still in the backseat of the cab, and then the two men fled the area on foot, Jackson said.
After about an hour, Herson was observed walking on Broad Street by borough police Detective Mark McGowan and was placed under arrest, the police spokesman said. Herson’s bail was set at $50,000 with no 10 percent bond option by Municipal Court Judge Mark Apostolou.
Herson is currently incarcerated at Monmouth County Correctional Institu-tion, Freehold Township, in lieu of bail, Jackson said.
The minor was charged with robbery, theft and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, and is currently being held at the Monmouth County Youth Detention Center, Freehold Township, according to the spokesman.
At this time, neither the money nor the weapon has been recovered, Jackson said
